The Hiesman Curse

Heisman Trophy tales -- Strange stories behind what happens to statues after they've been awarded

Winning the Hiesman Trophy in college solidifies the athletes spot as a first round draft pick because of the skill set they have demonstrated to earn the prestigious award. We have seen some of the most talented quarterbacks win this trophy get and selected number 1 overall in the draft and find them selves with no success in the league.

Some of the most talented quarterbacks to win the Hiesman and some how in their career suffered, “the Hiesman Curse” were Tim Tebow, Sam Bradford, Cam Newton, Robert Griffin III, Johnny Maziel, Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, and Ioe Burrow. When looking at their previous season that helped the earn the trophy they either lead their team to a championship or put up unbelievable status that put them ahead of everyone else.

Al though here are some of the quarterbacks that shined truly well in college, but did not quite make it in the NFL for long.

Tim Tebow in Denver was one of the more exciting season when John Elway was the GM. The Fans of Denver witnessed Tebow Magic as he lead the Broncos to victory over the Steelers with a winning score of 29-23. This ended up being Tebow’s last Denver game, which he was traded to multiple other teams throughout the league but never had much success.

Sam Bradford was the qaurterback for Oklahoma where he lead the sooners to a Big 12 Championship, he recieved awards like Big 12 offensive player of the year, First Team All-American, and Number 1 over-all in the 2010 NFL draft. Player in the NFL he never sprouted like everyone in the NFL and the the time St. Lewis Rams had hoped for.

Although one of the most electrifying quarterbacks to win the Hiesman Trophy and completely lose out on their entire career in a matter of 2 year was Johnny Manziel. In college football everyone knew about “Johnny Football” and on every given Saturday he was going to show his skill set with his feet to get him out the pocket to make a play. Manziel was the 22nd Pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns.

These quarterbacks were though to be stars for a long time in the NFL, but all had sort careers in the NFL after winning the Hiesman Trophy, so does this mean the hiesman trophy is cursed?
